dsjnix asked:

My husband has been offered a new position with same company in a different state. (From Atlanta, GA to Scranton, PA)They have offered him $125,000. He currently makes $65,000 and combined we make $136,000 per year. In moving I will be giving up my great job, so is it ok to ask for them to at least give us enough to make up what I will be giving up? (meaning increasing offer to $136,000 per year?) ( I will be giving up contributing to my retirement and stocks in addition to my salary.) My husband says we cannot expect them to care about my salary, but I disagree, who is right here? I also think they should pay for a trip for entire family to check out this city before making a decision, isn;t this typical.? What other things should we consider and ask for in this decision? ( we own a home and have three teenagers).

I was scouted by a company in a neighboring state (240 miles away). I have extensive experience with their type of products and they’ve scheduled a second interview. My family cannot afford to move without some type of relocation assistance. This isn’t a huge company, but they have very high revenue for their size, meaning I don’t think it would be a hardship for them. Am I in a good position to leverage for relocation assistance?

I’m one half (the words half) of a creative team. We have a couple of years experience working together in a London agency, and are both now very – very very very – keen to move to the states. We’re currently looking to make a move, whether or not we go abroad, and are getting our book together. But I’m wondering if there are any London based recruitment consultants who specialise in – or have a good track record of – creative recruitment to agencies in the US, or relocation in general? Thanks, buddies

I work at a company where the owner is asking us to reimburse relocation expenses without taxing or 1099′ing the employee. These are expenses like the deposit on someone’s apartment, the deposit on utilities, installation/startup costs of their digital cable tv, application fee for new apartment etc. These are for employees who are being relocated within the company (not new employees).

B asked:

I work at a company where the owner is asking us to reimburse relocation expenses without taxing or 1099′ing the employee.
It seems like the owner wants to avoid paying the employer share of taxes or grossing up so that the employee gets their full reimbursement. He doesn’t care if its wrong but what are the consequences? Will he just get nailed during an audit since they aren’t valid business expenses? Should we put it through payroll anyway?

He also does this for things like phone allowances or home office allowances.. reimburse people for things that do not have receipts but not through payroll or 1099’s. He only wants to pay $70 and promised the employee he’d pay them $70 (doesn’t want them taxed).
I feel like its wrong to pay those expenses but what is the wrong of it? I feel for the employee who needs the $70 to pay their cell phone or the $100 to cover increases in utitlties because they were forced to work from home, but how is it a valid work expense? Its an allowance… in essence, a bonus. If there is no receipt, you can’t document it as a business expense.
If the owner wants the checks cut out of Accounts Payable (bypassing payroll) then what? They are subject to taxes but he’s insisting we do it wrong. We could 1099 the employee at the end of the year but that seems wrong/mean.

He knows this stuff is wrong but somehow doesn’t think the rules apply to him. What are the consequences?

Can he just do that? I don’t have the authority to insist things be done correctly, I’m just supposed to put them in the system the way I’m told. I’ve spoken up but the people above me can’t seem to reason with him.

Relocation to Atlanta

My wife just left a company that paid for her relocation. She was not happy with the position and went to another company. Her contract was concerning relocation expenses, but the company has requested those expenses and the wages she was paid during the entire employment.
